That’s all besides the point. Right off the bat in line 7 of the play, my judgement came into play. I was hardcore judging Oedipus and was not liking him at all. The arrogance and hubris he exerts is too much for me. He radiates a sense of overconfidence that is so undesirable for a character in my opinion. Oedipus called himself “the Great”, but personally I think he’s more of “the meh”. I mean after all (spoiler alert) he killed his dad AND slept with his mom…. I think my judgement saved me this time on being disappointed about not liking the main character. The way Oedipus puts his own selfish desires and craving for the satisfaction of validation annoys me to the nth degree. I am a major empath, so something about someone listening to the struggles of a large group of people when you have the solution to their troubles simply for the purpose of being a “hero” just doesn’t sit right with me. I could never process why someone would think that way, but then I remember that narcissism is an issue that is seen far too often. The character of Oedipus also eerily relates to someone prominent in our society right now, which is also another very good explanation for my quick judgement and dislike of him.
